Description

We have a new printing of the Milano 1840 now. They are still in the same kind of 2-part telescoping box, but with a different paper wrap AND with a matte finish on the cards instead of the high gloss of the previous edition.

According to the publisher, "Ferdinando Gumppenberg is one of the greatest innovators and inventors; ingenious in the field of playing card production during the 19th century. When he arrived in Milan in 1809 from Munich, he brought German technology along with a trunk full of experience to share with Italy. He had studied with J. Fetscher and also brought with him the news, taste, fashion and trends that were of contemporary Germany and Austria during the 2nd half of the 1700's."

Cards have a lovely palette with orange, blue and green predominant, over woodcut-like black line art. Trumps & Court cards have Italian titles. Characters in Trumps and Courts have serene, yet determined expressions. Suits of Spade, Coppe, Bastoni & Denari have pip cards with Marseille-style symbols and additional embellishments. The Re Bastoni has a reproduced tax stamp from the Kingdom of Lombardy, with a value of 'C. 70' (70 centesimi) and F.I. (for Ferdinand I.) 1 hand-numbered title card included. Printed on sturdy card stock with a matte finish as opposed to the earlier edition's high gloss surface which was rare for decks from this publisher.

Card dimensions:
2 3/16" x 4 3/8"
