Before there was The Lord of the Ring there was the Ring of the Niebelungen from the old Norse and Teutonic legends. This beautiful deck and book package could just as easily be called the Arthur Rackham Tarot. Created by Allegra Printz who selected the art and developed the thematic relationships for integrating the symbols of the Tarot with the Norse myths and legends that are the basis of composer Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle.
Populated by scenes from Arthur Rackham's glorious illustrations for the Ring Cycle created in the early 20th century (1911-1912), Printz has selected the same characters shown at different stages of their lives and in different situations to represent different Tarot symbols which underscores how the archtypal energies can be aspects of the same individual.
The four elemental Tarot suits are derived from the four races of the Ring Cycle characters: Gods (Fire/Wands), demi-god Walsungs (Water/Cups), human Gibichungs (Air/Swords), and dwarf Nibelungs (Earth/Disks/Pentacles).
