Reconstructed by Robert M. Place from the early 15th century writings of Jacopo Antonio Marcello describing a deck created for Fillipo Maria Visconti sometime between 1412 and 1425, so predating the Visconti Sforza by at least 15 years. No surviving cards are known, so Place has reconstructed them from the neoclassical images referenced in Marcello's writings.
Some of the correspondences are self-evident, Jove as Emperor, Juno ( Giuono) as High Priestess. But some correspondences are more subtle. Is Ceres not the Earth Mother (Empress in the standard deck). Is Hercules not Strength? That is why this deck is an important stage in the development of the Tarot symbology. We are indebted to Robert Place for resurrecting this lost awareness.
Michelino da Besozzo was the original artist under the direction of the Duke Fillipo's secretary and astrologer Marziano da Tortona.
